If you are looking to increase the heating efficiency of your fireplace and add visual appeal, consider fireplace fireback installation. A fireplace fireback is a metal panel made up of stainless steel or cast iron which is fixed at the back of the fireplace. It serves several purposes like protecting the back of the fireplace from intense heat, adding visual appeal to the fireplace, and increasing heat output of the fireplace by reflecting heat into the room.
At Clean Sweep Chimney Service, we offer fireplace fireback installation services throughout St. Louis and St. Charles counties. Contact us today to schedule an appointment with our fireplace expert to understand fireback installation in detail and find out the benefits it can offer you.
How Does a Fireback Work?
A fireback works by absorbing the heat generated by the fireplace and reflecting this heat back into the room. Here is a detailed explanation of its function:
When a fireplace is lit, the heat radiates outward from the flames to the back walls of the fireplace. Positioned at the back of the fireplace is a fireback that absorbs the heat along with the fireplace itself. The smooth surface of the fireback acts as a reflective barrier, directing the absorbed heat outward into the room instead of allowing it to be absorbed by other materials in the fireplace. By effectively reflecting the heat back into the room, the fireback increases the overall heat output of the fireplace and spreads warmth across the surrounding areas in the house. This makes your home cozier and more comfortable.
The Fireplace Fireback Installation Process
The installation of a fireplace fireback includes several steps, and is best performed by skilled professionals. Here is the installation process in detail:
- The installation begins with preparation. This includes cleaning the fireplace and making sure that the fireplace is free from debris. It is also important to check the condition of all fireplace components to ensure they are free from damage or deterioration.
- Measurements of the fireplace opening are taken. This is done to determine the exact size of the fireback that is going to be installed at the back of the fireplace.
- After determining the type and size of the fireback, it is positioned at the back of the fireplace. It should be aligned vertically and in the center of the fireplace opening so that maximum heat is reflected into the room.
- The fireback is then installed and secured by using mounting hardware or brackets.
- After the fireback is secured, it is tested by lighting the fireplace. This is done to determine if the fireback is reflecting heat back into the room.
- Once the testing is done, the final touches are performed. This includes cleaning the debris from the fireplace that was generated during the installation process.

Fireplace Fireback Installation FAQs
Not necessarily. A fireback is an addition to a masonry fireplace that can protect the rear wall from intense heat and reflect heat into the room. Whether one is appropriate depends on the design and condition of your fireplace.
Yes. A properly fitted fireback creates a protective barrier between the fire and the rear wall of the fireplace. It can help reduce the amount of direct heat absorbed by the masonry while also reflecting heat back toward the room.
Firebacks are not one-size-fits-all. The fireplace opening and interior dimensions should be measured carefully so the fireback fits appropriately and does not interfere with safe fireplace operation. Professional measurement and installation can help ensure the fireback is properly positioned.
A fireback can reflect some of the heat produced by the fire back into the room rather than allowing as much heat to be absorbed by the rear wall. The actual improvement will depend on the fireplace and its existing construction.
